Chevrolet has been as creative with their hood ornaments as they have been with their cars.
In the 1920s, Chevrolet utilized a winged woman jumping forward. This hood ornament is widely recognized on the 1/2 ton trucks from the 20s. Moving into the 1930s, Chevrolet hood ornaments were symbolized as an eagle, but by the time they left the 30s, it was either a locomotive type design or a locomotive and eagle combination. In the 1940s Chevrolet hood ornaments consisted again, of the eagle, locomotive or eagle and locomotive combination.
During the 1950s, Chevrolet began moving out of the locomotive phase to an eagle and airplane styled combination or an african antelope known as an Impala. This logo was easy to spot on the 1955 Bel-Air.
In 1957 Chevrolet began the trademark gunsight logo that had the Chevrolet 'bowtie' on the inside as their hood ornaments. These hood ornaments were easily found and recognizable on popular cars like the Caprice and El Camino.
In the 1970s, spear emblems could be found on the Monte Carlo. Eventually Chrevrolet, like many other car manufacturers, stopped using hood ornaments altogether and began to use general brand logos.When looking for genuine Chevrolet hood ornaments, check for details. Veryify the animal, locomotive or airplane shapes against Chevrolet historical pictures. Know shapes, sizes and the era for the hood ornament. Measure if necessary.
